With the New Year underway, many of us have started our New Year's Resolutions. One of the most common resolutions is to be healthier in Council Bluffs IA this year, whether that be losing weight, exercise more or eat healthier. This usually comes with us indulging ourselves a little too much in the New Year's eve festivities simply because we know that starting the next day, we will no longer enjoy that pizza, burger or sugary beverage.

Starting a New Diet in Council Bluffs IA

Our new diet and Gym membership are ready and we hit the ground running. For most but not all, these changes last only a short time. My opinion is that we try to do too much too quickly. If your plan is to cut out all carbs, exercise for 2 hours, drink 2 gallons of water and eat enough vegetables to fill up a roadside farmers market, you are setting yourself up for failure.

The best way to make healthy changes in your life is to start small and slow. The goal is not to do this diet for 3 months and then go back to eating like a teenager or to do this exercise program for 3 months and then restore that perfect "you" shaped indention in your couch. The goal should be to make small sustainable changes to your lifestyle that you can perpetuate. Cut out pop or go down to one a day and then eventually none after a few weeks.

When eating out, try to alternate your choices. Have a salad this time knowing that next time you could eat a burger. When going to the gym, don't try to be the next CrossFit champ. Do some light exercises and work your way up to lifting more or jogging longer on the treadmill. This will help your body to adapt easier to exercise and prevent injury.

Take things one day at a time, one decision at a time. It's easy to say I will never have fast food again but difficult in practice when you only have 20 minutes for lunch and you forgot to pack something and Mickey D's is across the street. However, saying this time, I will just have an unwich from Jimmy Johns which is fewer calories and carbs than the big mac and fries you would have gotten, is a victory.

Make the decision to be healthier and eat better, one decision at a time. Remember one of the healthiest things you can do is to make sure your nervous system is functioning properly with a Chiropractic Adjustment. As always, Have a Well-Adjusted Day!
